Muslim Council of Montreal disappointed with Liberals CharterNovember 25, 2013FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Montreal, Quebec, November 25th, 2013 - The Muslim Council of Montreal (MCM) strongly criticized the Quebec Liberal Party for proposing their own version of the PQ Charter of Values to address the issue of “religious fundamentalism.” “Quebec Liberal leader Mr. Philippe Coulliard was baited by the PQ government to propose a counter charter and instead of sending a clear and strong message of rejection to them, as the Canadian Liberals did, we are very disappointed to see him fall for this bait,” said Salam Elmenyawi, president of MCM. “He has now reduced the Quebec Liberals to the low level of the PQ government, wasting time and resources on non-issues instead of focusing on the real problems.”MCM fears the Liberals will follow in the footsteps of the PQ government in attacking freedom of religion, judging, labeling and categorizing citizens as first and second class citizens based on their religious identity, and stripping away the rights and freedoms granted to them by the constitution. MCM calls on the local Liberal MNAs, as well as the federal Liberal Party, to address this issue and weigh in on the comments of Mr. Coulliard and the Quebec Liberal Party’s intention for their charter.
